For the second time this year, residents can pick up advice and tips on how to secure their home against burglars, as part of the Basildon Community Safety Partnership’s (CSP) Lift it, Lock it or Lose it roadshows.
The CSP, a multi-agency organisation which includes Basildon Council and Essex Police, launched the Lift it, Lock it or Lose it campaign to tackle the emerging problem of burglary in the borough.
As part of the ongoing campaign police officers, council representatives and a crime prevention officer will be on hand to offer advice on how to secure your home. The event will take place on Wednesday 30 May from 10am-3pm inside Asda at Pipps Hill Retail Park, Miles Grey Road and is the second of three events planned for this summer.
There will be demonstrations on how to properly lock UPVC doors, after it emerged that one third of burglaries in the borough were as a result of owner's not locking their UPVC doors properly.
Residents will also be able to pick up window alarms, property marking kits and purse bells.
Paula Mason, Basildon Council’s Community Safety Manager, said: “Hundreds of residents made use of our crime prevention advice and information at the last road show. Police and community support officers were also on hand to give talks on the importance of securing your home to prevent burglars gaining easy access to property. We hope the turnout for this event will be just as good, and the word spreads about the Basildon Community Safety Partnerships key message on beating the burglar.”
Inspector Richard Baxter added: “It sounds so simple, but residents need to lift the handle, lock the door and then take the key out. Too many people aren’t locking their doors after lifting the handle and are leaving the key in there, making it easy for opportunistic burglars.”
Throughout the three month campaign, Facebook and Twitter users can access regular burglary crime prevention tips and advice. Just follow Basildon Community Safety Partnership on Facebook at www.basildon.gov.uk/basildoncsp or follow @BasildonCouncil on Twitter.
