Compost giveaway day success
BASILDON Council’s recycling team dished out free compost to 150 lucky gardeners at the weekend. (Saturday 26th May)
The third annual compost giveaway day was held on Saturday 26th May, and 18,000 litres of 100% recycled compost was given away
Councillor John Dornan, cabinet member for the Environment for Basildon Council, said:
“With over 17,000 tonnes of garden and food waste collected across the Borough in the past year, we were pleased to give some back for keen gardeners to use to grow something else.
“It just goes to show that everything you recycle has another use once you have finished with it.
“I would encourage all householders to make the most of their food and garden waste collections – once a week, all year round, to divert as much material from landfill as possible, and to keep recycling rates high.”
The composting process takes around 6 months to make your garden and food waste a useful product, and requires a period of heating before it can be fully composted.
