The redevelopment of Basildon town centre has been named as one of the top 20 regeneration projects in the UK, according to two leading trade magazines, Regeneration and Renewal and Planning.
The £900m redevelopment of Basildon town centre came in at number 19 and is also featured in the top five of projects in the country to gain planning permission in the last year for all of part of a scheme.
Projects are judged on their overall value and must fit a strict list of criteria and have to be ‘realistic and genuinely set for development.’ First place went to the Olympic Park valued at £6.9 billion, with Greenwich Peninsula coming second, valued at £4.6 billion.
Councillor Tony Ball, leader of the council, says:
"We are delighted that Basildon town centre has made the top 20, and is in fact, the second highest town centre project in the list.
“It just goes to show what a great investment location Basildon is, and is testament to the hard work and vision that the council has shown. Whilst town centre projects up and down the country have failed, Basildon town centre continues to move forward.
“We look forward to continuing to work hard to regenerate the borough and town centres with our many partners that will help to create opportunity for local people and local businesses.”
